Armed with a map, clue sheet and mobile phone, teams of 2-6 Rompers attempt to solve challenges at Checkpoints located at iconic venues and quirky locations across Melbourne.

Teams have four hours in which they face a range of challenges involving trivia, history, mathematics, geography, observation and physical endeavours. Teamwork is the key to success on Romp Day!

Giant Hammerhead: Frozen in Time – Until July 17

This school holidays, Melbourne Aquarium is giving visitors the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come face to face with an ocean giant – a 4.5 metre long Great hammerhead shark, frozen in time.

Housed in a specially-designed refrigerated unit, the Great hammerhead is on the second leg of an Asia-pacific tour promoting shark conservation.

Stand in awe of this incredible animal and learn about one of the most unique species of shark swimming in Australia’s oceans.

Hammerheads are one of the most recognisable sharks in the world. Their most famous feature – their uniquely hammer-shaped head – give these amazing aquatic animals some very special abilities. Like an in-built GPS, hammerhead sharks can detect the magnetic fields of the earth, using this ability to cross large stretches of ocean and return to exactly the same reef it started from!

Although formidable hunters, these animals are endangered, making the need to educate about conservation extremely important, ensuring that Great hammerheads will continue to roam the ocean forever.

Launched especially for the Giant Hammerhead exhibit, don’t miss Shark Cove, an interactive activity area where special presentations and real-life shark artefacts will teach you about all the different types of sharks found in the ocean.

One of Australia’s most versatile and loved comedians, Dave O’Neil, is back after four years of being stuck in the house. The talented comedian has delighted audiences for over 20 years and is performing his comeback show Happy to Be Out of the House at the Town Hall as part of the 2011 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Dave, a regular on ABC TV’s Spicks & Specks and Network 10’s Good News Week, said 'it will be great to get back on stage ‘cos I don't get out too much. Putting the bin out these days is a night out... Tuesday is a big night at my place, sometimes we have recycling on a Thursday and I’m knackered those weeks”.

Dave brings his laid back and self-deprecating comic perspective on life for anyone who has been in a relationship and either has children, has come into contact with, or has had enough of their kids. The easy-going comedian has plenty of material to draw on, combining his time in breakfast radio, regular comedy and TV with a long term relationship and being a hands-on Dad to three children.

“Leaving the house with three screaming kids can sometimes take a more complex exit strategy than the Americans leaving Iraq,” Dave said.

Dave was supposed to perform his show at 2010 MICF but broke his leg in 16 places a few weeks out. Instead of performing, he ended up in hospital for two weeks, and was housebound for the next six. This year he is even happier to be out of the house after that experience!

So book early and see Dave in fine form after practicing this one for a while!

Learn the art of finding happiness at the Tibetan New Year Festival at the Tibetan Buddhist Society’s Melbourne centre on the weekend of 26 and 27 February.

The Society’s Spiritual Leader, 88 year-old Tibetan meditation master and scholar Venerable Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden says, “Every living being shares the same wish: young and old, every nationality, humans and animals. All living beings want happiness and they don’t want suffering. Changing one’s mind, rather than one’s external conditions, is the fundamental cause of happiness.”

The festival's theme ‘Change your mind, change the world' affirms that real change starts with each and every one of us, as we look to our new year ahead. Talks at the festival will explain Buddhist methods to develop the mind of compassion and a new view of the world based on love, patience and care for all living beings.

The New Year Ceremony for World Peace on Saturday 26 February at 12 noon is open to everyone. Led by Buddhist monks and nuns, the ceremony brings together different religious traditions, community groups and local, state and federal government representatives to share views on community issues and pray for universal harmony. The ceremony is held in the Society’s magnificent traditional Tibetan temple.

The Society’s 10-acre property in Yuroke, located 30 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, is an oasis of landscaped gardens rich in colour and fragrance. Visitors can wander the gardens of organically cultivated rose bushes and native plants, flowering courtyards and abundant bird life. The gardens are maintained with recycled water and feature 2000 trees including 23 Californian redwoods, 35 golden robinias, 31 olive trees and weeping mulberries.

Festival highlights include:

Teachers from various streams of Buddhist thought including Tibetan, Thai and Zen will give talks and guided meditations around the theme of personal change, focusing on topics such as how to meditate, developing love and compassion, understanding the nature of mind, karma and other aspects of Buddhism.

· Cosmopolitan market with wares from around the world including Tibetan and local handicrafts, Indian shawls, Thai jewellery, Tibetan and Nepalese blankets, books, meditation cushions, bags, ornaments, candles, soaps, and incense. There is a special children’s painting activity.

· The Enjoyment Shop stocks a wide range of organic foods, handcrafted clothing, scarves, soaps and the Tibetan Buddhist Society’s special blend of chai tea and selection of gift cards.

· Garden tours with Venerable Tim McKibben providing explanations of the many rose varieties, the history of the centre and the art of companion planting and pesticide-free cultivation.

· Temple tours with Venerable Cathy Evans explaining the significance of the religious and artistic treasures such as the 18-foot statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, constructed in Nepal.

· Delicious vegetarian food, home-made cakes and fresh chai in a delightful outdoor café, and

· Photographic exhibition showing the Tibetan culture in pre-1959 Tibet and exiled Tibetan communities in India.

Well-loved comedian Dave O’Neil is being honest about his feelings with his latest stand up show I Heart Julia. Performed in the Labour heartland at Trades Hall, the show is running for FIVE NIGHTS ONLY from 17th- 21st August in the lead up to the Election. Just a few months ago Dave broke his leg, which prevented him from performing his first solo show in four years at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and after recently finishing on full-time radio after nine years, Julia Gillard has given him the inspiration to get back to his roots again. “ I haven’t fallen this hard for a red head since Ronald McDonald”, Dave said when probed further about his love for the current Prime Minister. “ Damn that Tim bloke, I could do a pretty good blow-dry too”. Dave is no stranger to election campaigns either, and during the last federal election in 2007, he stood as the Independent candidate for the seat of Gellibrand against Health Minister Nicola Roxon. He received a total of 2.3% of votes, which was a proud moment for him and his Party Pie Party followers. “I got more votes than The Democrats and Family First put together, admittedly most people who voted for me were drunk at the time ”, Dave reflects. Dave will also reveal his shady past in student politics, where he belonged to the Labour club at University. Dave was a card-carrying member the very same time our Julia was active on campus. “In 1985 I went to the same Young Labour Conference as Julia Gillard, I could have pashed her there except I got stuck next to a very young ambitious man called Bill Shorten, what ever happened to him? And he was a terrible kisser...” In his nineteen years on the Australian comedy scene, Dave has worked extensively in radio, television, film, print media and on the live comedy circuit. Dave is also a regular on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks and has appeared on Channel 10’s The Panel, Rove Live, Australia’s Brainiest Comedian and Comedy Festival Gala. To celebrate the release of his new album "TCB" James will be performing two special theatre shows where he'll perform songs from the TCB album along with other "Elvis" material. The shows will feature an 8 piece band and while he won't be donning any white leather jumpsuits, it will be vastly different to how you've seen James perform in the past. At the "James Reyne Sings The King" shows, James will also open the event, performing a set of his own material, so don't be late!

For years I've held a kind of fanciful curiosity about Elvis Presley. I've long thought he was an extraordinarily under-rated singer, who, as such, had sometimes been over-looked as a bit frivolous and run of the alley; who had instinctively recorded some of the most groundbreaking, influential and exciting music ever, when there was no rule-book.
I wondered whether I could have the AUDACITY, PRESUMPTION and DAMN GALL to try and record an album of my own versions of some Elvis songs.

The main aim was to try and make the songs my own, always aware of the stupidity of trying to imitate Elvis himself and the folly of even pretending to contend the brilliance of the originals, but keeping a sense of humour intact and still remaining true to any crucial rhythms or cadence or musical elements that existed on those first, seminal, exhilarating recordings.

I hope I've done some justice to these tunes I've tagged; a smithereen of the music of an actual legend who, for those who've seen the famous shot of him being bussed on either cheek by two girls, is right there with you while he ain't there at all.

AUSSIE music legend Jimmy Barnes made a promise last year that he would gather some of the most legendary American musicians together and tour the very chart-topping album they helped him create - The Rhythm And The Blues.

Brace yourselves, for Barnes is about to deliver on that promise.

In conjunction with the Frontier Touring Company and Premier Artists, our most famous rocker has his A-team in place for a select run of shows through late March and early April. These will be for ONE NIGHT ONLY!

Jimmy has gathered musical luminaries such as the great drummer James Gadson (Diana Ross, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin), bass-man Reggie McBride (Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker), keyboardist Mike Thompson (Eagles), guitar icon Johnny Lee Schell (BB King, Etta James, Joe Cocker) and experienced brass maestro and arranger Darrell Leonard exclusively to come to Australia to perform with Jimmy on his ‘THE RHYTHM AND THE BLUES' tour.

If you thought ‘The Rhythm & The Blues' album moved you, wait until you see and hear Barnes and company in the flesh breathe new life into such rollicking classics as Red Hot (Billy Lee Riley), That's Right (Chris Powell), Keep A Knockin' (Little Richard) and Big Joe Turner's Shake, Rattle and Roll. Or, for a sweet turn of tenderness, the subtle charms that reworked Johnny Adams' Reconsider Me or Nina Simone's My Baby Just Cares For Me will no doubt yank at the heartstrings when caressed through the speakers in a live atmosphere.

Speaking of heartstrings, Barnes doesn't merely enjoy playing this brand of 1950s rock and roll - he damn well loves it, especially when serving it up in the company he will keep on this tour.

"This album was such a pleasure to make. Three days in the studio with the musicians of that caliber and singing these type of songs was a breeze. I was sort of bummed by the end of it because I could've done a double album it was so much fun, just so I could keep singing with the band," Barnes said after recording the album.

"There I was, in the studio with players who had the pedigrees of doom, and the attitude of doom, so we got in there and it was like their first band ... their enthusiasm overwhelmed me. With them, it was like playing in my first band. It was fantastic."

Be bummed out no more, Mr Barnes. The Rhythm And The Blues is about to have its second coming. And it's our impending good fortune that it will happen right before our very eyes and ears at the following venues.

Jimmy and his mega band will also include songs in the set from his multi platinum ‘Soul Deep' and ‘Soul Deeper' albums. Both of these chart toppers feature Barnes classic reworked versions of soul hits that have become staples of today's classic radio playlists.
