Supertramp have begun a 2010 tour in expected controversial style when they began performing songs by Roger Hodgson with whom the band had an unwritten agreement not to play songs he wrote.
Not playing Hodgson’s songs would have left a sizable hole in the band’s set. Hodgson wrote- amongst many others- “Dreamer”, “The Logical Song” and “Take The Long Way Home”.
Whan asked about this situation, Roger Hodgson admitted there was no formal nor legally binding contract with Supertramp, just a verbal agreement.
The Supertramp tour has been officially named “Supertramp 70-10 Tour” in recognition of the band forming in 1970 and now touring some 40 years later in 2010. Hodgson’s absence from the tour means that Rick Davies is the only member of Supertramp 2010 who was there in 1970. This was noted by Hodgson’s management in a release: “We’ve been told that they are billing the tour as the 40th Anniversary tour of the band and we just find this very surprising, misleading and disrespectful of Roger since he is the only other member that was a part of Supertramp when he and Rick founded the band together 40 years ago.”
Not every reunion is happy- nor truly a reunion…
