Music legend Molly Meldrum is expected to remain in an induced coma until next week, as doctors attempt to ease the swelling in his brain.

The iconic Aussie music personality fractured his shoulder, ribs and vertebrae, and punctured his lung, when he injured himself putting up Christmas decorations on Thursday night.

Molly’s brother Brian said the focus at the moment was on stabilising his head injuries. "With a fractured skull there is bruising to the brain that will probably get worse before it gets better so they need him under sedation until that happens… He will remain that way until early next week,” he said.

"At the moment we're taking little steps forward but there's nothing to say things couldn't go backwards in that respect. He is not out of danger as far as his life goes."

Twitter has been flooded with messages of love and support for Meldrum from fans all over the world, as well as big stars like Russell Crowe, Shane Warne, Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Julia Gillard, Boy George and more.

Meldrum said the huge amount of support shown for his brother was a huge help.

"He's rarely overwhelmed by anything. He'd be totally overwhelmed by the support ... and that gives us tremendous heart," he said.

Meldrum is being treated in The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
